The site's second story is modern: in the 1960s UNESCO cut both temples into blocks and lifted them above the rising waters of Lake Nasser, one of the great rescue feats of engineering.
Is it worth it?
If your itinerary already reaches Aswan, do it from there: the road and air connections are shorter and cheaper. The Cairo version earns its place when the south is otherwise out of reach and you have exactly one day to spend on it. Because the day depends entirely on flights, book it as a package that explicitly includes them, and treat the early start as part of the deal.
