Hurghada is Egypt's busiest Red Sea base, and almost everyone who stays here spends at least a couple of days off the sunbed. The town sits within easy reach of some of the clearest water in the country, a wide stretch of desert, and — with an early start — the temples of Luxor and the pyramids of Cairo. Below you'll find the excursions people actually book, with a rough idea of how long each one takes and what you'll pay so you can plan your week before you arrive.

Island snorkelling: Orange Bay and Giftun

The classic Hurghada day out is a boat trip to Giftun Island and its famous sandbar, Orange Bay — often called the "Caribbean of Egypt" for its shallow turquoise shallows and white sand. A full day runs roughly 8 to 9 hours door to door, with two or three snorkelling stops over the reef and lunch served on board. Group trips typically start around €20–35 per person; a private boat for a family or small group costs more but skips the crowds. If you only do one sea excursion, make it this one. For water and reef conditions through the year, see our Red Sea snorkelling guide.

Desert safari, quad bikes and Bedouin dinner

When you've had enough of the water, the desert delivers the other half of Hurghada. Afternoon safaris usually combine a quad-bike run over the dunes (or a 4x4 or buggy), a stop at a Bedouin camp, a camel ride, a stargazing session and a BBQ dinner with a short show. Count on about 5 to 6 hours, mostly late afternoon into evening to dodge the heat. Prices generally land in the €20–40 range depending on how long you ride and whether dinner is included.

Dolphin house and the Sindbad submarine

Two gentler sea options suit families and non-swimmers. The Dolphin House (Sha'ab El Erg) boat trip heads to a reef where wild spinner dolphins are often seen — a half to full day, from roughly €18–35, with sightings likely but never guaranteed. The Sindbad Submarine is a genuine submarine that descends 20–25 metres so you can watch the reef through the windows without getting wet; the whole outing takes about 2 hours and costs around €55–65.

Grand Aquarium

A good rainy-day or with-kids choice, the Hurghada Grand Aquarium is Egypt's largest, with a walk-through shark tunnel and over a thousand species across themed zones. Tickets with hotel transfer run about €40 for adults and less for children, and you'll want two to three hours inside. It's open daily and works well as a half-day filler between beach days.

Day trip to Luxor

Luxor is about 3.5 to 4.5 hours by road, which makes a long but very doable day trip. A typical itinerary covers the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, Karnak and the Colossi of Memnon, leaving before dawn and returning after dark. Expect a full 14–16 hour day and prices from roughly €50 per person in a group up to several times that for a private guide and car. It's a lot of driving, but seeing the tombs first-hand is worth the early alarm.

Day trip to Cairo

Cairo can be reached by road (about 5 to 6 hours each way) or by a short domestic flight, which turns a punishing drive into a comfortable day. Either way you'll see the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and usually the Egyptian Museum. Road trips start around €55–70; flight packages cost considerably more but leave you far less tired.

Best time, private vs group, and how to book

Hurghada is a year-round destination, but April, May, September and October give the best mix of warm water, good visibility and bearable air temperatures. Group tours are the cheapest and most social; private trips cost more but let you set the pace and are worth it for families or anyone short on time. Treat all prices here as guides only and verify at the time of booking. Browse the bookable excursions below and reserve online before you travel — the popular boats and Luxor days fill up fast in peak season.

Domande frequenti

What are the best excursions from Hurghada?

The standouts are the Orange Bay and Giftun Island snorkelling boat, a desert quad safari with a Bedouin dinner, and the dolphin house trip. History lovers add a long day trip to Luxor, while families often pick the Sindbad Submarine or the Grand Aquarium. Most visitors combine one sea day, one desert evening and one cultural excursion across a week.

Can you take a day trip to Luxor or Cairo from Hurghada?

Yes to both. Luxor is about 3.5 to 4.5 hours by road, so a group day tour to the Valley of the Kings and Karnak is very popular despite the early start. Cairo is further — around 5 to 6 hours by road, or a short domestic flight that makes the day much easier. Flight-based Cairo trips cost more but leave you far less worn out.

How long do Hurghada excursions take?

It varies a lot. Island snorkelling boats run about 8 to 9 hours, desert safaris around 5 to 6 hours (usually late afternoon into evening), and the submarine roughly 2 hours. Luxor day trips are a full 14 to 16 hours door to door, and Cairo by road is similar. The aquarium needs only two to three hours.

How much do excursions from Hurghada cost?

Group prices are modest: snorkelling boats and desert safaris typically run €20–40 per person, the dolphin house from around €18, and the submarine about €55–65. Luxor and Cairo day trips start near €50–70 in a group and rise sharply for private guides and flights. All figures are rough guides — always verify the current price when you book.

Should I book a private tour or join a group?

Group tours are cheaper and more social, and for the standard snorkelling and desert trips they're perfectly good. A private tour costs more but lets you set your own pace, choose your stops and skip the crowds — most worthwhile for families, photographers or anyone doing a long Luxor or Cairo day where comfort matters.

When is the best time to visit Hurghada for excursions?

Hurghada works all year, but April, May, September and October give the best balance of warm sea (around 26–28°C), clear visibility and comfortable air temperatures. Summer is hottest and busiest, ideal for the water but tough for long desert or Luxor days. Winter is quieter and pleasant on land, with slightly cooler water for snorkelling.
