Cairo Day Trips & Excursions

Cairo sits within easy reach of more world-class sights than almost any city on earth. You can stand under the Great Pyramid before lunch, walk through five thousand years of treasure in a single museum, or drive out to Roman Alexandria or the desert lakes of Fayoum and still be back for dinner. The trips below are the ones travellers actually book, with a realistic sense of how long each one takes and roughly what it costs. Prices are ranges only, so always verify the current rate with the operator before you commit.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis

This is the classic Cairo day out and the one most people come for. A full itinerary pairs the Giza plateau, home to the three great pyramids and the Sphinx, with the step pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara and the open-air ruins of Memphis, Egypt's first capital. Expect a full day of around eight hours door to door. A shorter half-day version covers Giza alone in four to five hours, while a longer option adds the Bent and Red pyramids at Dahshur. Private tours with a car, licensed guide and entry fees typically run around $65 to $100 per person, less in a larger group.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

The long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum opened fully in November 2025 beside the Giza plateau, and it has quickly become a day trip in its own right. It holds over 100,000 artefacts, including the complete Tutankhamun collection displayed together for the first time and a towering statue of Ramses II in the atrium. Islamic & Coptic Cairo

For a change of pace, a walking day through old Cairo trades the desert for medieval streets. Islamic Cairo takes in the Citadel of Salah al-Din, the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the bustling Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Coptic Cairo, a short drive south, gathers the Hanging Church, the Church of St Sergius and the Ben Ezra Synagogue in one compact quarter. A combined tour fills a comfortable five to seven hours and suits travellers who want culture and street life over long drives.

Alexandria Day Trip

Alexandria makes a long but rewarding day. It is roughly a three-hour drive each way, so an early start is essential. The city rewards it with the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, the Roman amphitheatre, Pompey's Pillar, the seafront Qaitbay Citadel and the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Budget ten to twelve hours in total. Prices for a private car and guide usually land around $90 to $150 per person depending on group size.

Fayoum & Wadi El Rayan

Southwest of Cairo, Fayoum offers desert lakes, waterfalls and fossils about a two-hour drive from the city. A typical trip visits Wadi El Rayan and its rare desert waterfalls, the Magic Lake and dunes, and often Wadi El Hitan, the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Whales with its ancient whale fossils. Reckon on a full day of eight to ten hours, ideally in a 4x4.

Bahariya & the White Desert (Overnight)

The White Desert is the one trip on this list that is not a true day trip. Bahariya Oasis is around a four to five hour drive from Cairo, so the surreal chalk formations of the White Desert are almost always done as an overnight, camping under the stars with a Bedouin guide. Two days and one night is the standard format. If your schedule is tight, treat it as a mini-expedition rather than a squeeze.

Best time, booking & private vs group

October to April brings the cool, comfortable weather that makes long days outdoors bearable; summer means very early starts to beat the heat. Book a day or two ahead in high season, longer for Alexandria and desert trips. Private tours cost more but give you a flexible pace, hotel pickup and a guide to yourself, while group and shared tours are cheaper and more social. For pyramids and museum days, a licensed guide is well worth the extra.
