Overview

Aswan is the loveliest stretch of the Nile, and the felucca — the lateen-sailed boat that has worked this river for centuries — is the way it's meant to be seen. This late-afternoon sail casts off from the corniche and lets the wind do the work, gliding almost silently around Elephantine Island, the ancient heart of Aswan whose Nubian villages and ruins rise from midstream. You'll pass Kitchener's Island with its botanical garden, planted with trees and shrubs gathered from across the tropics, and look up to the domed Mausoleum of the Aga Khan on the west bank and the desert monastery of St Simeon beyond it. There's nothing to do but sit back on the cushions, trail a hand in the water and watch the sandbanks, the birdlife and the other feluccas as the light softens. The captain trims the sail to catch the breeze while the sun sinks behind the western dunes and the granite islands glow. It's an unhurried couple of hours — the calm counterpoint to Aswan's temples — with hotel transfers arranged and the boat to yourselves.
