One of the most significant is the monastery dedicated to St Anthony, known as the oldest Christian monastery in Egypt. It currently houses more than 100 monks and contains an ancient Coptic church that holds the tomb of St Anthony. As you move through the complex, you can admire well‑preserved medieval paintings and see a library filled with valuable ancient manuscripts. Opposite St Anthony’s lies St Paul's Monastery, built over the cave where Saint Paul, a 4th‑century hermit, lived. He chose an ascetic life in the desert and devoted himself to worship. According to legend, God sent bread to him by ravens to keep him from starving, and it is said that lions dug his grave after his death at the age of 105. Together, these monasteries will offer you a close encounter with a rich Coptic spiritual and historical heritage.
