Two of Egypt’s best-preserved temples sit north of Luxor, and far fewer travellers make the trip to see them. At Dendera you’ll see the Temple of Hathor still wearing its original colour: a deep blue ceiling painted with the night sky, vast columns topped with the cow-eared face of the goddess, and a carved zodiac on the roof. As you move through the site, the vivid decoration and scale give a clear sense of how this temple was experienced in antiquity. At Abydos you’ll explore the Temple of Seti I, home to the King List — a wall naming 76 pharaohs in order — and some of the finest raised relief carving in Egypt. Behind the temple stands the mysterious Osireion, which adds another layer to the site’s ancient ritual landscape. An Egyptologist will explain the significance of the carvings and architectural features, helping you make sense of what you see. It is a long day with real driving, but the reward is two masterpieces with hardly a crowd in sight.
