In Alexandria you'll begin at The Catacomb, the largest Roman cemetery. The site has three levels cut into the rock, and the tomb decorations show a mixture of Pharaonic and Greco‑Roman art. Inside the Catacomb you'll see burials placed in sarcophagi, in shelved niches and as urns of ashes from cremation. As you move through the area, you'll visit Pompey’s Pillar, which was built in honour of Emperor Diocletian at the end of the 4th century. The pillar stands where a temple once formed part of a complex originally dedicated to the god Serapis. You will continue to Qaitbay Citadel, the Ottoman fortress erected on Pharos Island on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The citadel is considered one of the most important defensive strongholds in Egypt and along the Mediterranean coast. The experience ends at the modern Library of Alexandria, a cultural complex that is considered the biggest library in the world, as it contains eight million books. Along the way you'll explore layers of Alexandria’s history, from Roman burial rites and imperial monuments to medieval fortifications and contemporary cultural institutions.
