On the Nile’s West Bank you will explore a compact group of funerary temples and tombs that reflect ancient Egypt’s royal funerary landscape. The visit includes the Valley of the Kings, where the rock-cut tombs of pharaohs are clustered. You will also see the Colossi of Memnon — two huge seated statues that mark the approach to other monuments — and the Temple of Hatshepsut, dedicated to Egypt’s most famous queen. As you move through the sites you will learn about the funerary architecture and symbolic design of the era. There will be an opportunity to enter the tombs of famous pharaohs of ancient Egypt, giving you a direct sense of the burial chambers and decorations carved into the limestone. Along the way you will observe how temples, statues and tombs were arranged on the West Bank and how they relate to the Nile and the afterlife beliefs of the time.
