From quad safaris behind the Red Sea resorts to the surreal rock formations of the Western Desert, adventure in Egypt is varied and, mostly, very affordable.

What is on offer

The volume seller is the Red Sea desert safari: a quad or ATV ride into the dunes from Hurghada or Sharm, usually finished with a camel ride, a Bedouin camp and a barbecue under the stars, all from a low price. Further afield, the White Desert near Bahariya is a camping trip among wind-carved chalk formations, Siwa Oasis offers dunes and salt lakes, and the Fayoum has waterfalls and a valley of ancient whale fossils.

Practical notes

Desert safaris are cheap, fun and widely run, but they are still motorised vehicles on sand, so listen to the briefing, keep to the convoy, and cover your face against the dust. Go late afternoon to ride into the sunset and avoid the midday heat, and bring a layer, since the desert cools fast after dark.
