Day trips are how travellers stretch a fixed base into the whole country: the Pyramids from a Red Sea beach, Luxor's temples from Hurghada, Abu Simbel from Aswan, or the Mediterranean at Alexandria from Cairo.

The big routes

The most-booked long day trips run from the Red Sea inland. Hurghada to Luxor (around four hours each way) is the single most popular, delivering the Valley of the Kings and Karnak in a day. Hurghada or Sharm to Cairo reaches the Pyramids, by long coach or a much faster domestic flight. Aswan to Abu Simbel crosses the desert to Ramses II's colossal temples, and Cairo to Alexandria trades pyramids for Roman ruins and the sea.

Making a long day worth it

The trade-off is time in transit, so book the small-group option on the longest routes for a better pace, choose the flight version to Cairo if you can afford it, and start before dawn. If your schedule allows, an overnight often beats a marathon day trip. Prices vary widely with distance and whether you fly, so check exactly what is included before booking.
