Egypt's national opera house, rebuilt on the Gezira grounds after the original burned down in 1971. Programming runs across the Main Hall, the Small Hall and the open-air theatre, and the Opera also stages work at the Salah El Din Citadel across town — worth checking which before you set off, because they are half an hour apart. Formal dress is enforced in the Main Hall: jackets for men, no jeans. Doors close at the downbeat and latecomers wait for the interval. Metro Line 3 stops at the door.
The state opera house on Gezira, home to the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, the Opera Ballet and the Arab music ensembles. Tickets route out to Tazkarti and the cheaper balcony seats go first. The complex also programmes the Small Hall and the open-air theatre, and separately runs summer concerts at the Salah El Din Citadel, which is a different part of the city entirely.
