Hurghada Excursions & Day Trips

Hurghada is Egypt's busiest Red Sea base, and almost everyone who stays here spends at least a couple of days off the sunbed. The town sits within easy reach of some of the clearest water in the country, a wide stretch of desert, and — with an early start — the temples of Luxor and the pyramids of Cairo. Island snorkelling: Orange Bay and Giftun

The classic Hurghada day out is a boat trip to Giftun Island and its famous sandbar, Orange Bay — often called the "Caribbean of Egypt" for its shallow turquoise shallows and white sand. A full day runs roughly 8 to 9 hours door to door, with two or three snorkelling stops over the reef and lunch served on board. Desert safari, quad bikes and Bedouin dinner

When you've had enough of the water, the desert delivers the other half of Hurghada. Afternoon safaris usually combine a quad-bike run over the dunes (or a 4x4 or buggy), a stop at a Bedouin camp, a camel ride, a stargazing session and a BBQ dinner with a short show. Count on about 5 to 6 hours, mostly late afternoon into evening to dodge the heat. Prices generally land in the €20–40 range depending on how long you ride and whether dinner is included.

Dolphin house and the Sindbad submarine

Two gentler sea options suit families and non-swimmers. The Dolphin House (Sha'ab El Erg) boat trip heads to a reef where wild spinner dolphins are often seen — a half to full day, from roughly €18–35, with sightings likely but never guaranteed. The Sindbad Submarine is a genuine submarine that descends 20–25 metres so you can watch the reef through the windows without getting wet; the whole outing takes about 2 hours and costs around €55–65.

Grand Aquarium

A good rainy-day or with-kids choice, the Hurghada Grand Aquarium is Egypt's largest, with a walk-through shark tunnel and over a thousand species across themed zones. Tickets with hotel transfer run about €40 for adults and less for children, and you'll want two to three hours inside. It's open daily and works well as a half-day filler between beach days.

Day trip to Luxor

Luxor is about 3.5 to 4.5 hours by road, which makes a long but very doable day trip. A typical itinerary covers the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, Karnak and the Colossi of Memnon, leaving before dawn and returning after dark. Expect a full 14–16 hour day and prices from roughly €50 per person in a group up to several times that for a private guide and car. It's a lot of driving, but seeing the tombs first-hand is worth the early alarm.

Day trip to Cairo

Cairo can be reached by road (about 5 to 6 hours each way) or by a short domestic flight, which turns a punishing drive into a comfortable day. Either way you'll see the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and usually the Egyptian Museum. Road trips start around €55–70; flight packages cost considerably more but leave you far less tired.

Best time, private vs group, and how to book

Hurghada is a year-round destination, but April, May, September and October give the best mix of warm water, good visibility and bearable air temperatures.
